How many days do I need? Three days are enough for the city and Monte Albán; five allow you to add the valley towns and a mezcal palenque. Do I need a car? Not within the city, where the centre is walkable; for excursions it is better to hire transport or rent a car. When does it rain? The rainy season runs from May to October and rain usually falls in the afternoon, so mornings are well spent. Does altitude affect you? The city sits at about 1,500 metres: on the first day walk slowly and go easy on alcohol. When is it busiest? During the Guelaguetza, in late July, when accommodation prices rise and booking ahead is advisable.
