Travel guide
A first visit to Mérida
Content
Mérida is easy to cover in three or four days. The historic centre is explored on foot: the main square, the Paseo de Montejo and the markets are within walking distance of one another, and afternoons are the best time to walk them because the heat drops. Set aside a full day for an archaeological site and another for the cenotes of the state interior. Food is one of the reasons for the trip, so it is worth eating in the markets as well as in downtown restaurants. If the trip falls on a Sunday, several downtown streets close to traffic and fill with stalls and music.
