Using Suica and Pasmo IC cards in Japan's transit network

Back to the editorial hub

Content

Rechargeable IC cards, primarily Suica and Pasmo, are the essential tool for smooth travel on local trains, subways, city buses, and for quick purchases at convenience stores across Japan. As contactless smart cards, they eliminate the need to purchase individual transit tickets at every station. They can be topped up with cash at ticket machines in any station and are interoperable across Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and most regions nationwide. Beyond transit, they work at vending machines and for luggage storage in station coin lockers.
